A few people have decided to learn how to crochet, and Denise has kindly agreed to help them.  So if you feel that one hook may be way of the future come along in the next couple of weeks.

“Austerity Chic is an evening class with a difference – and it’s starting in Llantwit Major on 17^th September.  The classes are based on using traditional skills to save money, make new stuff, and have fun along the way.  And there will be cake too.

“As the credit crunch nibbles away at people’s cash, spending loads-a-money on a new outfit seems just a touch wasteful when you already have a wardrobe full…but what if you could make one?  Or alter something to fit?  When even fashion journalists have noticed that £300 for a handbag is a little excessive, and Tesco is apparently selling two sewing machines a minute, then it’s time to join the trend.

“The classes will definitely include knitting, sewing and crochet and we’ll be making bags, skirts, scarves and even slippers.  We can also offer felting, spinning, rug-making, making lotions and salves from herbs and wild plants.  It will be up to participants to choose what they want to do.  We won’t have a pattern for a toilet roll cover in the shape of a doll with a big skirt, but we can offer pretty much everything else!

“If you are the sort of person who turns up a droopy hem with a bit of sellotape don’t worry – most of us were chucked out of school needlework too.

“The course fee includes all materials, along with tea and cake each week.  Classes take place in the Llantwit Major Heritage Centre from 7 – 9 pm each Thursday evening.

“There will be 6 sessions and the total cost is £24.

Liz and I recently visited the States and did a bit of wool/yarn shopping and we were also invited to Stitch n’ Bitch in Corning.  All the people we met were really helpful and welcoming so thank you to everyone there.  The names I remember are Jean at Wooly Minded ,Corning (www.woolyminded.com/) she talked to us for ages and was very knowledgeable (shes also an ex.pat). Wanda at Cornings Sn’B and Tod at Loopy Yarns, Chicago  (http://www.loopyyarns.com/index.html) Tod is a member of Ravelry but I’ve lost his ID, but he talked to Liz for ages about lace knitting and has her completely convinced so she bought some beautiful 4ply  that he recommended. He also told us a story about a man (yes men in the US knit) who was having marital problems. He was knitting so quickly and spending so much money on yarn that the family were close to bankruptcy.  The people at the shop encouraged him to knit lace and he hasn’t looked back.  So not only aren’t they just after our money they are also marriage problem solvers and they just love knitting and knitters. We loved it there, and were ready to move in if there had been a bed!

We also helped Aubrey our friend in Indianapolis to spend lots of money on yarn in a fabulous shop there and also start knitting again.   We visited Knit Stop (http://www.knit-stop.com/) this shop was fabulous and again the staff and other knitters were really friendly and helpful, they also had some really interesting yarns, I’ve taken a photo of some we brought back for Thirsa, she hasn’t made anything yet but its just beautiful to look at.  The US have many more yarn shops than we do, they are much bigger sell hardly any acrylic, have a much broader spectrum of yarns and also have a big table with chairs where anyone can come in and knit also getting help when they need it.  Here are some photo’s that Liz took and some photos of the things we have made so far with the wool/yarn.

Should we go as a group? we could either go by train or share cars, what do you think? I think the clothes swap sounds like a good thing, we could also take some yarn and see if we could swap that.

I’m trying to spread the word about a free event we have coming up for anyone interesting in knitting.

At Wales Millennium Centre we have free performances on our foyer stage most days. On one particular evening in Sept (Tues 22nd) we’re inviting all knitters to come down and enjoy some live music while they knit. The reason we’re holding this is because we have a free exhibition at that time looking at Welsh wool and yarns and will also be holding a Clothes Swap the Sunday before so the events are all interlinked for creative people interested in fashion. Our foyer area has comfy benches and there’s a bar serving alcoholic and hot drinks as well as tapas so it’s just a chance to knit, chat and listen to some live music at the same time.

Coming up….get your knitting needles ready, grab a comfy seat and a drink and get knitting while enjoying live music by Louise Latham on the Glanfa stage. ‘Chicks with Sticks’ will take place on Tuesday 22 September from 6pm. No need to book, just come along.
